Plan vs. Reality: Having a Child Abroad

So, you’re planning to have a baby abroad? Or it happened by accident? Now picture it: You, gracefully handling prenatal care, easily adapting to local birthing practices, and smoothly fitting into postpartum customs. Sounds almost social media perfect, right? Like you’re either seeing pictures on Instagram or watching a video on TikTok. Well, let’s talk about reality because it’s more like a wild rollercoaster ride than a gentle walk in the park.

When I first thought about having a child abroad, I imagined myself as a super mom, totally prepared for everything. Spoiler alert: reality had other plans! Although I had beautiful friends who had gone through this journey before and they gave the best advice, there were parts that didn’t quite fit my reality. They either had their experiences in different countries, or we simply had different experiences in general. Like the time I didn’t plan ahead and the birth ended up costing me a bucket of money. Not great, right? Or the time I heard someone saying they didn’t know there were prenatal care courses or lactation consultants, or even something like their spouse’s parental leave rights. Imagine missing out on two full weeks of having that extra hand while you’re still figuring out your baby. Hearing more stories like that made me write this book. And what’s better than hearing from specialists themselves? We have a juicy Q&A at the end that you can’t miss! Or hearing stories from people who have been through this before you.

Here’s a peek into what it’s really like, and why my book, Maternity Abroad: Exploring the Journey of Becoming a Mother in a Foreign Land, can be your trusty guide on this adventure.

The Unexpected Surprises

Navigating Healthcare Systems: Imagine trying to order coffee in a new language. Now, swap “coffee” for “prenatal care.” Yep, it’s that confusing. Each country has its own healthcare quirks, and figuring out how to find a good doctor or choose the best birthing option can feel like solving a puzzle.

Different Birthing Practices: You might dream of a serene water birth, but in your new country, that could be as common as a unicorn sighting. Adjusting to local birthing practices means balancing your expectations with what’s actually available, and sometimes, that means surprises.

Postpartum Customs: In some places, postpartum traditions are as sacred as holiday rituals. Embracing these customs can be fascinating, but also a bit strange. Who knew steaming with herbs post-birth was a thing? (Yes, really, in some cultures it is!)

Finding Pediatric Care: Ensuring your little one gets top-notch pediatric care can be like navigating a maze. Different vaccination schedules, unfamiliar healthcare providers, and language barriers can make this a real challenge.

Childcare Options: Need daycare or a babysitter? Great! Now, finding someone trustworthy can be a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. But don’t worry, it’s doable!

Citizenship and Legalities: Navigating the legal landscape of birthright citizenship and other legalities in a new country can be as tricky as untangling a ball of yarn. Some countries have straightforward policies, while others might require you to jump through a few hoops. Understanding these laws is crucial to ensuring your child’s future is secure.
